Hovhannes Avoyan is a computer science veteran with 24 years of programming and management experience. He is a member of ACM , IEEE , Computer Socienty, and ACM Special Interest Group on Software Engineering.
He is a senior lecturer at the American University of Armenia and was a visiting lecturer at San Francisco State University. He is also lecturing at State Engineering University of Armenia and Yerevan State University, where he designed new curricula with focus on Java and Internet technologies.
Avoyan awarded Java Champion title from Sun Microsystems.
His prevous role was General Manager and Director of Development at Lycos Europe. He built up the Lycos Armenia team starting with 30 people and currently Lycos Armenia is the largest development center for Lycos Europe and employs approximately 200+ people.
Avoyan graduated Bertelsmann University's Senior Executuves program at Harvard Business School.
Avoyan is a president of Armenian IT association UITE as well as founder and Board member of Open Source Armenia project.
He is also leading an open source project www.buildap.com . Buildap is an architecture based design and development tool. His next talk will be at the IASTED International Conference on Internet and Multimedia Systems and Applications ~EuroIMSA 2006~ (Paper Title: Circuit Board Approach for Building Web Application).
Prior to Lycos, Avoyan was a VP of Technology at Brience Inc. (based in San Francisco and acquired by Syniverse ), which delivered solutions to companies like Ingram Micro , Washington Mutual , Wyndham Hotels , T-Mobile , CNN , Cisco and other well known companies.
Before Brience, he was a founder and CEO of a startup, which was acquired by Brience. The company was created in 1996 and was one of early adopters of Java and other advanced technologies. Avoyan gave a speach about Java at Cebit trade fair in Hannover in 1998. Avoyan is regularly invited as a guest speaker and panelist at workshops and conferences, as his recent participation at Digitec 2005 conference.
Overall, Avoyan was actively involved in two acquisitions. Avoyan has rich offshore development experience working across many geographies and cultures, including many European countries, USA and Canada.
